Meetup was a pretty cool thing, until they started charging group organizers $19 a month. I know, they wanted to make money somehow, but group organizers were orginally volunteers who provided a service for free. To have to pay for that privilege... well, it didn't go over particularly well.

I've been keeping tabs on other sites that are being put together as Meetup alternatives. Today I saw that Gatheroo is in Alpha and seems to be working. I joined, and I'm the sixth person from California to join! Many of the groups already created are in Minnesota, probably because Gatheroo is based there.

I created an American Sign Language practice group and one for the International Silly Beings of Nyo. Both can be found here:

If I can get a few other people to join, I'll start scheduling some events.

Here in L.A. My People Connection received an influx of people from Meetup when they started charging.

Now that I know about Gatheroo, I'll pass the word. Thanks for the link!

I hope it catches on. Thought I'd give it a try...

Thanks for the tip!
I'm going to try moving my OC Goth meetup group over to them.

Re: Thanks for the tip!
Ah, I see you and your group on there now. I hope it works for you.
Btw, I'll be in LAX area Feb 17-19, at a con for a little British show you might have heard of. Remember Doctor Who? :)

Of course I remember. I've been watching the new episodes as well. They take a while to download. I might stop by that con, if time permits, since ironically enough, my girlfriend is going to be in San Jose for Pantheacon.

Cool. Some of my friends will be at Pantheacon.
Yeah, I like the new series.

Doh, my charger is at home, so the phone will be off most of the time... and reception is bad in the basement where most of the con stuff is going on anyway. Best way for now to get ahold of me is ashinow at that anysize.org domain :) It forwards to a few contacts for me.

That was just nuts on their part, I mean, how much does it cost them per user, per month, $0.01? I cannot help but feel that charging that much is going to kill them. Get their cost down, charge for fancy features (like LJ), perhaps some google adds, and live with that. They seem like the last of the big budget dumb dot coms.

Hi all:

I wanted to drop you guys a line to thank you for signing up with Gatheroo. I appreciate it.

We are in alpha, which means that the site still has a few kinks to be worked out. Nonetheless, I am very interested in your experience. Please make liberal use of the "Feedback" button, those go straight to me.

Thanks again, and welcome to the beginning of a great community.

http://eventful.com looks pretty good, too...and if they're missing features, and don't respond when asked, I have an in to poke them harder.

I have to see a 11:30 showing of Glory Road with my class at Oakridge mall this Friday.

So pick me up at EVC at 8:40 and we'll go to Oakridge Lanes and eat there as well. Then I'll just go to Oakridge and be forced to watch a movie with my class (dear god no)

Ah, the basketball movie. My mom loved it, but she loves that stuff. See you then.
