Since I haven't had much to eat all day and didn't have time to find soy milk, I chose beer with my bento for its nutritional value. Now heading for Nagasaki.

ekiben. 1000 yen, not bad. It seems to be the normal price for the veggie bento box most places sell.

If you're visiting Nagasaki try and ride the ropeway (cablecar) up into the surrounding hills. There's a fantastic view of the city and the port from the top station (weather permitting) -- there's a viewing tower at the top and you can calibrate your GPS receiver at the datum mark just outside. It's on the other side of the river from Nagasaki JR station, a bit of a walk but then again I like walking in Japanese towns.

Thanks! I saw a sign at the JR station mentioning the ropeway, and i like ropeways, so I was already thinking about it. I'm here for 4 nights, plenty of time to see a lot. I might check out nearby Huis Ten Bosch too.

If you like ropeways there's a fine one in Kobe, just behind the shinkansen station. It terminates at a hilltop garden and exhibition centre. Apparently the site used to be a perfumery run by Dutch merchants, growing plants that benefitted from the altitude and local weather conditions.

My favourite Japanese ropeway is in Onomichi; it's a small-town kind of a cablecar but it's in my favourite example of small-town Japan so I'm biased on that score. I'll be in Japan after Easter at Hal-con in Omiya and I'll be making a side-trip back to Onomichi then.
