Yay, another convert to ubuntu.

Is that a network install? Why not install off a live CD? That way your new converts can try it out first.

Also, what do you do to support the people for who you install Ubuntu? The thought of having to support people when they hit a snag has turned me off of evangelisation.
There are a lot of people interested in Ubuntu, but I'm not going to help them get there -- because I would have to keep helping them. There are hardly enough hours in a day to do the things I want to do, let along unpaid tech support...

The cd that he made was scratched :(
I wouldn't really call myself a convert, just no longer willing to use windows.
That computer was also so slow and messed up that trying it out first wouldn't work at all, even if the cd had worked.
It is a really old computer that I abandoned a couple years ago when I got my powerbook.
Oh also the cd drives on both computers seem to be broken. So making a new cd would also not work, which is why I didn't do that myself in the first place.

Todd is just super dedicated I suppose. And a really good friend.

Aw thanks. :)

You should have a menu item under Applications called Add/Remove Programs. That will let you easily browse available software and what it does.

If it isn't there, let me know.

Also, I don't make a habit of setting it up for people, and cheesybunny can figure things out pretty well for herself. And there are others around who know a thing or two about Linux. :)

Oh, and the latest Ubuntu LiveCD boots fine both on Thespus and Zathras (had problems with both before using an older version). So I'm planning to put Linux on the TV again, and try out some critical Windows apps (read games) under WINE. If those run fine I'll be Windowless apart from work (where I have no choice).
The impetus for this has nothing to do with recently having to rebuild the registry hive on Zathras. Really.

Network install?
Todd, can you give me some pointers on doing a network install? Ubuntu boots fine from the CD I wrote, but refuses to install from it. Someone explain to me how it can actually boot the OS but not be able to install? I'm a little boggled. But if I can sidestep the issue with a network install that'd be happy.

Re: Network install?
I used a cd image from:

I messed up in selecting packages and wound up manually doing apt-get install ubuntu-desktop after the install was finished.

Re: Network install?
I will try that out as soon as internet access is restored at home. DSL modem issues following an electrical storm.
