Rainbows End, Dennou Coil's end
I just finished two stories that feature virtual overlays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality) over reality, and I recommend them both.

Rainbows End is a novel by Vernor Vinge which is available online here (thanks nolly!): http://vrinimi.org/rainbowsend.html The characters and plot really drew me in, and it amused me that this book is available online, given the plot involving the library.

Dennou Coil is a 26-episode anime series from Madhouse, based on the manga of the same name by Mitsuo Iso (original story) and Kuze Mizuki (art). Glasses can be worn that show augmented reality and virtual pets, and are worn by most of the children in town and some adults. I like the characters and plot a lot, and also enjoyed the music by Saitou Tsuneyoshi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denn%C5%8D_Coil

I can see these types of things becoming popular, like a new level of online gaming, or like the Sims. Would you use augmented reality, or would you be "old fashioned" about it? I think I would try to use it sparingly. :)

vernor vinge is one of my favorite authors. across realtime (both books are good, but the first is best) is one of the most in-depth well-written scifi books I have read. I loved snowcrash, the ice queen (that's the right name right?) and of course scott card, but that book has stuck in my head and really makes me think :)
